Fertilizer Friday

Not much new growing here except my list of things I want to grow outside this year. No matter how cold and miserable it can get outside mid January, a quiet few minutes with a hot cup of tea and a couple of seed catalogs will re-energize you in no time! 

 Lucky me to have received 2 bouquets of birthday flowers last Friday & Saturday. Today I rearranged them into one vase. They are still beautiful and quite fragrant.

Surprise! I'm trying to FLAUNT again!

After an extended absence from posting but not from my love of all things green, here's what brightens my day! These were anniversary gifts from my sweetie last fall and they are still impressing me beyond belief.  Unlike Miss Glenda who's own orchids are budding out in her greenhouse, I have a long learning curve ahead.

This may not look like much to you but...I'm so pleased I'm giddy.  Last spring I grew geraniums from seed for the very first time and they were wonderful.  This fall I decided to try cuttings again..  In all the years past I've never had any success, they went to mush before anything roots sprouted.  I figured nothing ventured nothing gained.

Well about 2/3 of this year's cuttings rooted and this is the first to start to flower!  Now I need some advice.  Should I let her go and flower to her heart's content or should I pinch it off and encourage more bottom growth? I do plan on repotting all of them from these coffee cups into something bigger in the new year.

Good morning gardeners! Glenda/Tootsie was interviewed for a  most informative podcast the other day. LISTEN HERE There aren't many gardening in the same zone as us...although some charts suggest we are zone 2a...so any tip is worthy to heed.

Once again, a little something from my indoor garden, a basket with pothos or philodendron (can you help me to distinguish the 2?) another peperomia and a baby spider.  These are all ancestors of the original plants that arrived in this basket when we first moved into this home from my parents.  Those blue clingy snowflakes on the window to is keep the birds from flying into the glass and getting injured.  I do have some iridescent leaves but it the lower light of winter, the birds don't always catch sight in time to divert away.

Another week has past and I'm so glad to have not shoveled the past 3 days!  Seems everywhere you go in town folks are complaining about not having anywhere to stack their snow.  I just hope this translates into some good soil moisture this spring.

I've been drooling over seed catalogues and running ideas through my head.  You don't want to see in there, it's crazy!!!!  If I had my way I'd be trying one of each!  But as I dream away I like to sit and enjoy this beauty, a variegated peperomia.  I don't know which variety it is, it came to me November 2009 in a live Christmas arrangement.

Fertilizer Friday

What's a person supposed to do when it's -24°C outside (which is good because it was -31°C yesterday)?  Anything garden related!!!!  And Tootsie has Fertilizer Friday up and running!  Just the thought of getting my hands dirty and planting seeds puts a smile on my face.

I was so amazed at my first attempt...successful at that...growing an amaryllis, I will be doing more this coming fall.  I'd love to tell you what the name of this beauty is, but it certainly isn't the deep red the packaging led me to believe it was!  I absolutely love the salmon edges against that creamy white.  I had 8 blooms open last month about the size of my hand of which there is only one remaining.  Absolutely stunning!
