New to me

I enjoy getting around by foot. For a time we were a one vehicle family and I would walk into town to run my errands. It was nothing for me to grab my library books, head off to the ladies' gym where I had a membership, swing over to exchange my reading material and then pop into the grocery store on the way home. Sometimes I would just pick up a banana to eat as a treat. I've lived in many places and found that walking was a good way to get to know your surroundings. I remember living in the married quarters east of Kingston and bundling up in my down jacket on a bright winter day and heading across the causeway for a little window shopping. By my return trip home, the jacket was totally undone but I was glowing.

Last weekend's charity walk has spurred my desire to walk more. Poor Joe is on his feet for 8 hours a day and walking with his wife after work is the last thing on his mind! Do you think we'll use the new tennis rackets I got him for his birthday tomorrow? Anyways, I have signed up for a Running Room clinic on fitness walking. I had no trouble with a 5 km walk but am willing to take this a bit slow so I can learn the basics right and then progress and improve speed, distance and technique. I found the staff at the Running Room very knowledgeable a couple years ago when I got fitted for my new shoes for treadmill workouts. They obviously love what they promote!

Staying with walking for a bit longer, I'm torn between signing for my third Underwear Affair in 2010 or to switch allegiances and sign up for the Alzheimer's Walk for Memories. Both have the same minimum fund raising requirements. If I switch, I can still support my daughter and her great cause by donating the annual charity quilt and attending her fundraiser. Decisions, decisions...if this is the hardest thing that I face today....I'm in GREAT SHAPE!

I'm taking Joe to Cowtown to visit with the kids and grandkids for his birthday. There are kids ball or soccer games to watch, a huge book sale to attend and then the grandkids have a fundraiser we'll attend. Sunday when Heather is off work, we are planning a huge birthday brunch and the weather forecasts is looking awesome! Hope you have just as great a weekend, whatever you are planning to do.

I should take a walk on my lunch and take a picture of the causeway for you! It would look lovely today, the sun is shiny and it is almost warm :-)

Rebecca, I really do miss being by the water and you can't beat the views around Lake Ontario! Second to none!

Sounds like a wonderful idea Berta! Since we've moved, I've done more walking than ever and I'm loving it. Not as much as you though! LOL!
